The scarlet mite, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes), is one of the most common species in India. It has extensive geographical distribution and host range. The species is of concern here in India, for besides damaging many ornamental plants, it attacks two crops of significant economic importance: tea and guava (Psidium guajava L.). B. phoenicis has been recorded in India previous to this study. DAS (1961) and Banerjee (1965) have given an account of the hosts, nature of damage, life history, relative abundance of this mite on different parts of the tea plant and control measures in north Eastern India. The species recorded earlier on guava by Puttarudriah and ChannaBsavanna (1959) from Mysore under the name Brevipalpus sp. is identified as B. phoenicis duringthe present study. This mite is abundant and has attained prominence as an important pest of guava in Karnataka. The seriousness of this mite as a pest prompted a study of its life history under laboratory conditions, which was carried out during 1968 - 70. The results of the studies on the develomental periods of various stages with description of the same including the adults, seasonal occurrence, host range and symptoms of injury are presented here. |
